I know it's been a while since there's been a discussion post here, but last night's episode had SO MUCH GAY I'm physically flailing a little bit.

So, let's have a 3x05 discussion! First and foremost, the most amazing part of the episode in my eyes: SARAH AND HEATHER WANT TO RAISE A FAMILY TOGETHER. THIS IS NOW CANON. HOW AMAZING IS THAT. Heather's face when she heard the news says, "PRETTY DARN AMAZING". (Speaking of Heather, her repressed-gay reaction to nipples on her television screen = excellent.)

But there were some great moments between all the sisterwives, too! (written as I was watching the episode, so apologies for rambliness) Yes, at last! I'm seeing Nicki/Ana! At first it was so easy to picture fierce angrysex between them, theirloveissowillfullandpushyandunwillingtosubmit. And then later on, giggly, super-intimate drunksex. Mmhmm. But everyone else too: Ana and Margie, of course, they're so touchy, always, and Margene's projecting protectiveness - "BARB, YOU WOMANIZER" - is hilarious; Barb and Ana, oh my GOD - that scene together in Barb's bedroom! So weirdly sensual, so telling, so intimate and wonderful, and then, and then! "I want Ana for myself!!" *happysigh* And the ending... star-crossed lovers, f'realz; Barb and Nicki, when Nicki gets so VERY wounded learning about Barb's desire to be close with Ana and not her that she has to seek outside het comfort; Nicki and Margie: Nicki is so totally obsessed with Margene's hair - the "she wants to look like me, of course!" line after all the "whore" talk last week is as hilarious and telling of Nicki's inability to stop thinking about Margie in a physical way as her "hey you look like the stripper on the poker machine, Margie who I watch naked through the window" line from last season, imo. And then bonding over snubbed Barb love, which brings us to; Barb and Margie, be still my beating heart.

And the OT3? Well, Ana ships it, and is leaving specifically so the three of them can be happy together. What more could you ask for. Except an OT4. :(

This series gives us so much to work with, I love it to pieces.

I still just can't get over Heather's FACE when Sarah suggested it! The sheer delight and joy and ahhhhh, her world has just been rocked. :D :D :D :D So happy for her! And considering how happy I think this will make Sarah in the long run, too...happy for them!

I laughed out loud at the WOMANIZER accusation.

And the scene in Barb's bedroom, planning their holidays together, was beyond intimate, wasnt it? like there was no question of ana being there.
tl__dr on February 16th, 2009 07:44 pm (UTC)
Hahaha, I did too! So adorable and...revealing. >:)

And yes yes, also the whole description Ana of diving into the Adriatic Sea and having it touch her lips...really seemed like something she'd be telling a lover to try to get them in the mood, or something. And then Barb changing in front of her like it was the most natural thing in the world - I can understand Margie's uninhibitedness on that front, but Barb! - just really made it seem like that bedroom belonged to both of them and always had. Add the "you feel like a true friend", the "I want Ana for myself! She gives me something I need, that you, Nicki and Margie, can't give me", and that utter utter heartbreak at the end of the episode, and mmmm. You have some real super-duper Barb/Ana-ness. (Which I particularly love because seeing Barb being gay makes Barb/Margie and Barb/Nicki, two one-sided feeling pairings that I nonetheless adore, that much more viable now.)

/rambling again...this episode was just so gooood!

Agreed on all counts, but the cliffhanger, it hurts us. ;__;

Heather/Sarah is my OTP.

I know, I really do feel heartbroken for Barb but if this is a permanent decision, it's definitely possible Ana will have succeeded at bringing the wives closer together, now that Barb's loneliness is out in the open, and now that Nicki and Margie have seen what their relationship with Barb COULD look like.

Re: Sarah/Heather...and what a gratifying OTP it is! :D

I do rather hope the writers actually explore Heather and Sarah in a positive way. It would be so cool to see them together. And what a story line for the show with the Hendricksons all dealing with the "pregnant gay daughter" issues.

I know it's unlikely but I have hope just the same.

Hi I'm about to rant at you, I APOLOGIZE YOU JUST reminded me of something I'm hugely worried about.
Me too! I really think there's evidence so far for this going in a very positive direction, as well as in a much more, uh, neutral direction (I hesitate to call Heather's character negative no matter what, because I think she's so wondrously realistic and her interactions with Sarah, no matter how they pan out, will have yielded a character as fantastic as her, but. Well, I'll get to the but in a moment), so I truly hope they choose to take it in the positive direction.

I mean, my only real reason for thinking Sarah is canon gay/bi is episode 1x04, which really really REALLY confirmed lesbian leanings to me, and it's been a while since then, but I have to hold onto this hope, for several reasons. First of all, I do honestly think if she's portrayed as genuinely straight and Heather's crush on her is milked purely for angst, that's actually a bit problematic. I mean, it's REALISTIC that she'd want to raise a family with her BFF, but the trusty lesbian friend being expendable emotionally and so pragmatically useful but never worthy of true sexual or romantic affection...it's actually a trope I've seen multiple times ("Hex" was a great example of this, ugh), and it's one I'm frankly sick of, because it makes lesbians a kind of commodity for straight women, a new kind of Gay Best Friend. Like I said, no matter what, I will think Heather's writing is stellar in this series, but if her ROLE - not her characterization, but her role - is to be the angsty but dependable baby-carer who sticks to a screwed up Sarah even though she knows there's no hope for a true relationship between them (and that knowledge ISN'T just because of the shortsightedness afforded her by her repression/internalized homophobia), then I really will find that kind of vaguely problematic.

On the other hand, *takes off rantyhat, puts on shiny tinhat* if Sarah does get into a real relationship with Heather and the raising of the baby takes on THAT context - and Sarah is pretty progressive, so if they portray her series-long weirdness around Heather as repressed gay affection, as her not wanting to have yet ANOTHER socially unacceptable layer to her identity, but her wanting and loving Heather and not knowing what to do with that, an interpretation I've been perfectly happy to keep up so far...if they portray her that way canonically, I can actually see her leading Heather into embracing her own homosexuality and the two of them embracing each other and oh, it would just be so joyful to watch - I can see nothing but amazing, groundbreaking positivity. Two queer girls in their religious situation with their political affiliations; two LONGSTANDING characters on a tv show being queered up TOGETHER, instead of one coming out as gay and having flimsily written oneshot characters basically introduced as handbags to function solely as their new gay gf/bf and nothing else in the story...another trope I hate, incidentally, and a trope Big Love can so easily kick in the keester; the Hendricksons, ceaselessly fighting for acceptance of their own lifestyle, having to come face to face with a lifestyle that falls so outside their own belief system but is on an equal playing field in terms of how it's viewed by society and can they really rightly treat their own daughter in a way they've endlessly decried being treated themselves?; oh boy, I could keep going too.

Basically, I'm really sorry for writing you a novel in response to such a simple comment, but I am in utter utter agreement of that comment, and I have the highest hopes for their relationship even if I also have some serious wariness that I'm ignoring for the time being because AHHH, HEATHER'S FACE! :DDD

Sorry, but what's the gay hint for Sarah in 1x04? I've seen it, but I don't recall the episode specifically.

Re: Hi I'm about to rant at you, I APOLOGIZE YOU JUST reminded me of something I'm hugely worried ab
Oh, should have specified! That was the episode where she went to the party with Donna, and spent a lot of time gazing at other girls dancing; it was really a matter of the camera angling making her seem to be looking through girl-loving eyes, but that's obviously far less subtext than somebody like Heather has, so it's mostly just my hope buoying my opinion that she's bisexual, I think.

LOL No appologies needed.

We shall keep our fingers crossed that the writers are not shortsighted hollywood hacks. They have done pretty well so far.
